Best toys of Toy Fair 2009

Toy Fair 2009 took place in New York this week, and aside from all the cutesy offerings there were some top-notch tech toys to play with.

We’ve scoured through all the stands to find the newest, and most nostalgic kids playthings that are most definitely for adults too. Want to see what the best ones were? See the top toys of Toy Fair 2009 after the jump!

Rubik’s TouchCube
It had to happen at some point: Rubik’s Cube got a touchscreen. Gone are the twisty tiers and sticky coloured labels, and in come an accelerometer and touch panels on all six sides to help you move the colours around – and there’s even a computer built in to guide you should you get stuck. Which you will. We reckon the Rubik’s TouchCube is a triumph, and our favourite toy of Toy Fair 2009.

Vex Walker
Did you ever see Jason And The Argonauts when you were younger? Remember how all those SFX monsters moved in it? That’s how this walking robocrab from Vex moves, jittering around like a meccano model on the caffeine. See it in action below.

Fly Stick Van de Graaff levitation wand

Van de Graaff generators used to be gigantic lumps of metal cluttering up school science labs, but now they’ve found a new home, inside these toy levitators. Dubbed the Fly Stick, it uses the same principle to float a mesh of metal above it, and with a bit (ok, a lot) of practice, you can use the wonderful wands to contort the mesh into all sorts of shapes.

Star Wars Force Trainer
Yes, we saw the Star Wars Force Trainer at CES last month, but like a Jedi it returned to woo crowds at Toy Fair 2009. Using a wireless headset that measures your brainwaves, the aim is to make a ping pong ball rise up the tube. Get it to the top and you’ll no longer be a Padawan, son.

Lego Mindstorms NXT 2.0
The new Lego Mindstorms NXT robotics kit not only rolls around like a truck or Wall-E, it even comes with a sensor to recognise different colours. You can also load it up with images and sounds to display on the control kit and blurt at people on command. We, for one, welcome our new robotic overlords.
