Apple could be working on a multitouch keyboard, ditching the need for a mouse with buttons altogether! Find out why we think Apple is prepping a multitouch keyboard after the jump.
Remember the Apple Touch Pad concept we saw yesterday? It might not be as far fetched as we imagined – some interesting hints have appeared online suggesting Apple could be working on a multitouch keyboard.
MacRumors stumbled across an interview with the two engineers who originally came up with the multitouch technology in the iPhone and MacBooks which suggested they had even bigger plans than pinching and zooming.
“I’d always felt that playing the piano was so much more graceful and expressive than using a computer keyboard,” said Wayne Westerman, the co-founder of Fingerworks, which Apple bought in 1998 to acquire its multitouch technology. He added: “I thought how great it would be if I pulled some of that expression from the piano to the computer experience.”
That sounds like a long-term goal for Westerman, and we can imagine it being the ultimate endgame for Apple too. Could Apple pull off a true multitouch keyboard? It’s still busily hiring multitouch engineers, with a job posting asking for applicants with experience in “Gesture Algorithms.”
Could we be seeing a giant glass trackpad on the way? Is Apple plotting the death of the keyboard as we know it? Steve Jobs has a renowned hatred of buttons, so we wouldn’t be at all surprised.
