Nokia NSeries gets Skype built in

All new Nokia NSeries mobiles will have Skype access built in, over 3G and Wi-Fi, according to the Finnish phone company. Fancy making calls for free? Find out how after the jump!

Nokia announced at Mobile World Congress that it plans to offer Skype access out of the box on all its new NSeries smartphones, over both Wi-Fi and 3G.

The first model to offer Skype will be the Nokia N97, due out in June, and Nokia plans to roll it out to all other handsets too.

The only caveat is that the phone will need to be powerful enough to run the Skype software, but since all Nseries phones have plenty of horsepower under the hood, we can’t see that being an issue.

It’s great news for Skype and great news for Nokia owners, but it’ll be interesting to see if the network providers are down with it: letting people use Skype over 3G could cost them a fair bit of cash, especially for pay as you go customers who’ll be able to add data access for a few more quid each months, and then dodge top-ups for ever! As always, we’ll keep you posted.
