Windows Marketplace app store revealed

February 16th, 2009

Windows Marketplace, Microsoft‘s expected app store for Windows Mobile, has just been announced. Will it beat O2 Litmus and Nokia Ovi Store? What about Apple’s own App Store? Find out after the jump.

Windows Marketplace is Microsoft’s attempt to cash in on the app store phenomenon started by the iPhone, and while it’s late to the party, it’s got a massive catalogue to start with: Windows Marketplace will sell more than 20,000 Windows Mobile applications and you’ll be able to download them straight to your handset.

Unfortunately, it’s Windows Mobile 6.5 only so we’ll have to wait until later this year to try it out, but a unified storefront for all the Windows Mobile apps out there has serious potential. More details on Windows Marketplace when we hear them.
