Pioneer to halt TV production

UPDATE: Pioneer has announced exactly when the KURO line will end. Click through to find out.

Pioneer is to ditch its TV line to save money after being hit hard by the recession. Pioneer’s killed the Kuro TV!

Pioneer says it’s cutting 10,000 jobs and ceasing TV production after revising its annual loss forecast to a massive $1.44bn. Ouch.

The Japanese electrical giant will shed 16 per cent of its workforce, in a move pretty much identical to all the big players (Panasonic, Philips et al), but it’ll also pulling out of the TV business by March 2010 at the latest, suggesting it’s been well and truly credit crunched.

Pioneer is looking to get back in the black through increasing satnav sales, and while that might make economic sense, we’re more than a little gutted that the Pioneer Kuro TV line, with its absurd black levels, will be no more. We’ll be sure to bury it next to the PalmOS.
