We’ve just heard that Freeview HD won’t transmit in 1080p full HD went it goes live. Find out why Ofcom went against 1080p Freeview after the jump.

Instead of a video codec that supports full HD, regulator Ofcom has plumped for MPEG4 4.0 compression, which is only 1080i, for the Freeview HD service due to launch in the UK later this year.

The move is not entirely surprising. Sky HD and Freesat aren’t offering full 1080p either, and Ofcom considers the newer full HD codec too much of a risk, especially when only a small number of households have 1080p compatible tellies.

Looks like we’re stuck with less than perfect HD telly to go along with our far from perfect copper cabling broadband then.

I think some of the manufactures should lean on OFCOM a bit hard when big decision such as these are made. Interlaced scan was invented for good old black and white TV back in the 1930s, it’s about time we moved forward to progressive scan. If you picture on your CRT started to flick on a “progressive scan” picture you’d soon get a new TV.
