Gmail gets location email signatures

Gmail will now let you add location details to your email signature. Big brother or big bother for no reason? Get the lowdown on Gmail location after the jump!

The location signature service for Gmail works by taking your public IP address and giving a rough estimate, though you can refine it with the location module in Google Gears, which works out your location from nearby wi-fi points.

So, perfect if you’re a regular business traveller, but of course, there is a slightly sinister aspect to location via email. Yes, it can be turned off, but what about when your boss starts wondering why you’re the only one on the team who’s not using it? You can forget working “at home” then.

The service is available to turn on in settings right now, and we wonder if there isn’t a financial benefit for Google in this 20% time venture. Location refined adverts? We’ll keep you posted.
