Twitter to charge companies

Twitter is considering charging companies who use its micro blogging service for business, according to Twitter CEO Biz Stone. Get the what, how and why after the jump!

We all know about pay as you go (PAYG) but what about pay as you tweet? In an interview with trade magazine Marketing, Twitter CEO Biz Stone let slip this nugget of information:

“We are noticing more companies using Twitter and individuals following them. We can identify ways to make this experience even more valuable and charge for commercial accounts.”

Stone didn’t say how this would work, but it’s perhaps no surprise. Twitter has been eating through venture capital funding for the last three years whilst it struggles to find a way to monetise the huge audience (6million plus) addicted to its free service. Charging companies might just be the way forward, as the service becomes an important tool in the business world. For instance, CNN Breaking News is one of the most followed feeds on Twitter, so the news channel would no doubt be willing to pay to keep that interactive readership.
