The Hikaru is a new take on Sony Ericsson’s Walkman series of phones, with an 8 megapixel camera, sliding keypad and metal housing. Hikaru rumours first appeared back in October.

The Hikaru will feature a 2.6 inch screen (possibly a touchscreen – unconfirmed at present) stereo speakers for all your bus passenger annoyance needs and a set of ‘music keys’ for quick navigation.

Most importantly, the Hikaru will be rocking a proper 3.5mm headphone jack like the Xperia X1, so no more having to cart an adaptor around.

Sony Ericsson plan to announce the Hikaru on February 15th at Barcelona’s Mobile World Congress 2009.

And the name? Two possibilities spring to mind – Hikaru no Go is an acclaimed manga series about teenage boy’s rites of passage, while Hikaru Utada is a popular Japanese pop idol so this could be like calling a phone a “Britney”. A bit.

All SonyEricsson codenames are female names.
