Archos isn’t happy simply making PMPs and, err, re-badged netbooks. Now it’s confirmed it’ll launch a new internet tablet, powered by the Android operating system.
From what the company has already confirmed, it’ll be roughly the same size as the Archos 5 PMP, but packing Android’s “telephony stack” to get online, make calls and, we’re guessing, tap into on-demand media too.
In a statement, Archos said: “With the integration of voice, Archos is looking to expand beyond portable media players to provide solutions for the converged space, where a foundation in high-quality video content delivery is a benefit.”
No, us neither. Still, the company goes on to promise a five inch screen, “PC-like internet experience,” full Adobe Flash and Flash Video support, HD video playback and storage up to a whopping 500GB.
All this in a package that’s just 1cm thick, and with a battery boasting 7 hours video playback. Oh, and it’ll make phone calls too.
Archos is calling its product the Internet Media Tablet, and we can’t help being excited by the stats. However, so far it has refused to release an image of the product. In our experience, that’s always an extremely bad sign.
Hopefully we’ll see a bit more of this at Mobile World Congress next week. Stay tuned.
