Apple TV to be revamped

Apple TV looks set to be revamped, as an official Apple questionnaire polls users about their Apple TV likes and dislikes.

The online survey on the official Apple website asks users about how they use Apple TV, from frequency to viewing hours, whether they rent movies or use it to view photos on the big screen, and what spec TV they’ve got Apple TV hooked up to.

The way we see it, Apple wouldn’t be asking if it wasn’t planning something new for Apple TV. Why wouldn’t it update it, just like MacBooks and iPods?

We may have a clue of what an updated Apple TV will include too: the survey asks users “what percentage of the content on your Apple TV comes from the following sources: iTunes Store; home videos (camcorder); short clips from the internet such as YouTube, email, downloads; movies or TV shows from the internet (Peer 2 peer, Bittorrent, other sources for downloading); video from your own DVD collection; or other sources.”

That suggests some sort of DVD ripping software (a’la Handbrake?) is being considered, but that would put Apple in a very murky legal area, so who knows. As always what’s up their mercurial sleeves. As always, we’ll keep you posted.

They should, but I doubt they will. I’d love to see it accept files outside the iTunes library, or even just play back DivX like it should have from the start.
