Grand Theft Auto creator, Rockstar Games, has announced a new sequel title for Xbox 360 and PS3. Red Dead Redemption follows on from 2004’s Western shooter, Red Dead Revolver, originally released on Xbox and PS2. Redemption is set at the turn of the 20th century and tells the tale of former outlaw, John Marston, gleefully indulging in every Sergio Leone stereotype in the Wild West.
Rockstar, as ever, is keeping further details close to its chest so it can tease them out with military precision over the months leading up to launch. Here’s what we know so far: set on the American Frontier, Red Dead Redemption is an open world adventure with a large, explorable environment featuring frontier towns, prairies, rolling vistas and wildlife.
Naturally, with this being a savaged and lawless era of history, you’ll be civilising the region using the equipment du jour: an armful of guns, a horse and a slightly unsettling swagger. From the first few screen shots, it’s already looking like a graphical treat and Rockstar also promises that the game will include a strong plotline with tons of unique characters and frequent heated gunfights.
Red Dead Redemption with be coming out on Xbox 360 and PS3 in Autumn 2009.
