UPDATE: We’ve told Microsoft that the Xbox 360 update appears to be doing more damage than good, so find out Microsoft’s response if you’ve been affected and let us know if support is helping.

he Xbox 360 update that rolled out on Tuesday appears to have been causing more problems than it intended to fix, including the dreaded red ring of death (RROD). Want to know what symptoms to watch out for on your Xbox 360? Find out after the jump.

Users on the Xbox forum have been complaining about a host of bugs that have mysteriously cropped up since the update, including Netflix failing to work, video crashing and even worse – the RROD.

As one user wrote: “I tried removing the power supply cable and the hard drive first thing and neither helped. It’s Red-Ringed for sure. ”

Dozens of others on the thread have complained of the same thing happening shortly after the update, which was meant to correct the error causing a lack of sound for Xbox gamers hooking their console up to the TV via HDMI. Coincidence, or something more sinister?

Looks like it’s out of the frying pan and into the fire for Xboxers then, so if yours is out of warranty, brace yourself – the update is mandatory.

WELL I JUST GOT RROD THX TO THIS UPDATE! WTF MS? WTF???

  2. Aubrey says:

My xbox has the RROD! How can I get it fixed? The warranty has expired, does anyone know if Microsoft will repair it for free?

  3. Daikide says:

I’m so freaking angry at MS right now. WTF? IT WORKED OK. IT WAS LOUD AS HELL AS ANY 360… BUT IT WORKED FOR YEARS AND NOW MS HAS CAME IN AND MURDERED MY CONSOLE… IT JUST CAN’T GET ANY MORE IDIOTIC THAN THIS.

  4. Tokux says:

If you look in the xbox.com forums you will see that this is not a coincidence but a true fact that Microsoft is trying to hide, the update IS causing multiple consoles to RRoD! MS should take responsibility for the bricked consoles since it is not the customer’s fault that a mandatory update wrecked up their Xbox.

  5. stuff says:

Why should Microsoft care? everyone seems to buy a new one anyway, I work in a game shop and know one customer who is on his eleventh system. Personally I’m on my third and last system. If this one breaks it’s time to trade it in.

Microsoft keep going on about how many systems the have sold but I wouldn’t be surprised if a third of them are replacements for dead systems.

  6. Beetle218 says:

Got me too. 14 month old Falcon console, NO PROBLEMS EVER. Mandatory update, BAM! Kept freezing on reboot, until RRoD on reboot. TOTAL BS!

  7. Fierce says:

My xbox busted after the update too…Its a few years old and I never had a problem before now..

I was playing Red Alert 3 online, a match video got lines through it, but it went away after the match, so I played a second one and it happened again…So I try to reboot and I get E 74.

There are 38,000 hits if you google xbox E 74 error now, I bet that skyrockets.

  8. teedojo says:

So upset right now. I want to freaking throw my xbox under a steamroller. Updated the console, and then BAAM! RROD. After 1+ year of it working PERFECTLY. Microsoft, you suck. But, what does it care…not much if you ask me.

  9. Danyal Ahuja says:

I have XBOX-360 and it was going well for more than one year. I bought a game that offered me to update the console. After the update, the machine worked for 2 months and one fine morning, it displayed RROD. At present the machine is still in the same status. Can any one be so kind to guide me what to do please. I live in Pakistan.
