Bill Gates unleashes mosquitoes on movie stars

February 5th, 2009

Bill Gates unleashed a jar of mosquitoes on a crowd packed with entrepreneurs, politicians and movie stars to highlight the problem of malaria yesterday, in possibly the strangest publicity stunt since those Microsoft adverts with Jerry Seinfeld in.

At the Technology, Entertainment, Design conference in California yesterday – known for its mix of rich and the powerful attendees – Bill Gates pulled out a jar of mosquitoes as part of a speech about malaria prevention.

“I brought some. Here I’ll let them roam around. There is no reason only poor people should be infected.”

Gates actually proceeded to open the jar in the theatre, leaving a good minute to go by before informing everyone that the insects were malaria free.

An important point Bill, but it’s lucky you’re a billionaire – if anyone else pulled that stunt in America, they’d be drowning in subpoenas and litigation before they could even put the lid back on.
