Call them what you like: Sledges, sleds, toboggans. Chances are, you’ve never owned a proper one. And no, those flimsy plastic death traps don’t count. Neither do tea trays.
But never fear, we’ve rounded up the best snow-skimmers from around the world. Feast your eyes on these frost-taming beauties, before the snow melts, and we all go back to moaning about recession instead.
BMW Sauber F1 Sled
Yes, BMW make a sledge. And no, considering its pedigree, it’s not that expensive. For $150 you’ll get a design suitable for one, or two very brave, people, durable cold-resistant plastic and a non-slip coating. It even comes with a handy carry case. Be warned though, unlike the other snow-goers on this list, there are no brakes and absolutely no steering to control your descent.
Porsche Kinderbob
Designed for kids, but equally drivable by foolhardy adults, the Kinderbob isn’t Porsche’s only sledge, but it is their sole steerable model. Chunky handlebars keep the rider in control, while a hinged ski up front lets them avoid trees, rocks and, well, death. It’s a snip at €79 too. That’s about £70.
Porsche Aluminium Sledge
If the Kinderbob is too childish for you, how about this? At £326 it’s almost five times the price, but just look at it. Look at it! Made from aluminium, and with a unique folding design for easy carrying, the Aluminium Sledge is a snow-lover’s dream… and probably their loved one’s nightmare.
Ferrari F1 Bobsled
Not to be outdone, Ferrari has gotten in on this sledding game too. It’s F1 Bobsled is steerable, with a Formula 1 style wheel turning two skis under its nose. There are footrests too, and best of all, a brake. It also comes with a red nylon bag, complete with the obligatory Prancing Horse logo. Whether it comes with a poser’s favourite: the Ferrari keyring, we’re not sure, but it’s pretty cheap at £56.
Volkswagen Lenkbob Snow Future GTI
If you see one of these hurtling towards you, get out of the way. Quick. The Volkswagen Lenkbob Snow Future GTI is styled after its Golf GTI, and almost as quick. The sole preserve of slope hogs and hooligans, it’s insanely lightweight, with a high seating position and little else. Oh, there’s a padded seat, which is nice. It means the rider won’t get a sore backside as they mow you down. The price for this snowbound killing machine? Just over £100.
Volkswagen Snow Flyer Herbie
Ah, this is more like it. See, Volkswagen? You don’t have to go fast to enjoy the slopes. The Snow Flyer Herbie is modelled on the lunatic Beetle of the same name, features dual skis and steering control, a brake, footrest, backrest and non-slip seat. Still, we bet you won’t look like Lindsay Lohan driving it.
