AT&T, the US telecoms network, is pushing Apple to create a MacBook 3G, according to one of its top execs. Will it be a straight MacBook update? That long awaited MacBook nano? Find out after the jump.

Glenn Lurie, president of AT&T’s Emerging Devices division says that he’s trying to cook up a netbook with 3G, and that he’s spoken with Apple’s current CEO, Tim Cook, in recent weeks.

“We’re having conversations with lots of folks. I would very much like to do more business with Apple, and hope that we do,” he told Fortune.

That’s all Lurie would say, but the man was responsible for cooking up the iPhone and AT&T exclusive deal in the US, so if anyone’s in a position to convince Apple it’s the right move, he is.

Apple has been infamously quiet about the booming netbook market, but that hasn’t stopped plenty of rumours and credible mockups doing the rounds. But now with the Sony VAIO P showing that there’s still scope for innovation in the market, and Steve Jobs hinting that Apple has some “interesting ideas” for a netbook, could this be the year of the MacBook nano with internet connectivity built in? This is something I really would love to see and something I’d definately buy. I’d like it to be very similar in design and spec to the VAIO P. I was disappointed that Apple didn’t announce one in January at MacWorld.

“[AT&T's Lurie] says that he’s trying to cook up a netbook with 3G, and that he’s spoken with Apple’s current CEO, Tim Cook.”

This sentence contains two separate statements. Nothing there can be construed as an unequivocal relationship between fact A and fact B. At best it implies his desires, but Apple calls the shots.

It’s like saying ‘I wash my car daily and I like oranges very much.’ You can’t infer that I eat oranges while I wash the car.
