Japan gets all the best toys. KDDI Corpoation has just announced the Wooo Keitai – the world’s first mobile phone capable of displaying in true 3D.
The phone is manufactured by Hitachi – hence the still-amusing Wooo branding – and is of course only available in Japan at present. It comes with a 3.1in screen capable of displaying full-colour 3D images.
the 3D effect is achieved using the ‘parallax barrier‘ method, which apparently doesn’t require any additional 3D glasses and instead relies on a grid in front of the scren that allows both eyes to see a slightly different image. This does require your head to be at a particular angle, however, so expect lots of stiff necks and awkward tube journeys if this ever makes it to the UK.
A ‘3D’ button will connect the phone to a dedicated streaming service that can pump 3D content directly to the handset. 3D content that we are hoping consists of more than just men in yellow blazers throwing shapes.
