CubeCheater is the kind of iPhone app that makes you realise that – yes – you really do live in the future and that it is an infinitely stranger and sillier place that you thought it would be when you were a kid. CubeCheater does one thing, but does it really well – solving Rubik’s Cube.

Simply take your Cube – jumbled up, of course, and let CubeCheater know what state it is in. You can do this by either using a colour selection screen to full in the squares on a diagram of the cube or by simple taking a photograph of a few sides using the iPhone’s camera.

With the data entry complete, you are ready to Cheat. CubeCheater will think for a few seconds before telling you how many moves it will take to solve the puzzle. The authors reckon it can solve pretty much any configuration in less than 19 moves on average.

With a solution worked out, the app will show you an animated guide to solving the cube yourself. You can have it work in reverse – start with a random or solved confiuguration and find out how many moves it will take to create the pattern of your choice.
