Apple will start selling premium price iPhone games on the App Store, according to sources. Good news? Bad news? Get the details after the jump.

PocketGamer.Biz is reporting that insiders say a premium section of the App Store will open this year selling $19.99 iPhone and iPod Touch games – we’d translate that into pound sterling for you but the exchange rate is so wobbly at the moment that it’d mean nothing.

Apparently, only a select few big publishers (EA and Gameloft are already heavily involved in the iPhone game market) would be allowed to sell games at that price, presumably to keep quality high. There’s no details on when this will go live, but it’s possible that Apple’s Worldwide Developers Conference in June could be a launch pad for it.

Everyone and their second cousin twice removed already knows that the App Store is a serious cash cow for Apple, so it’d be interesting to see whether it could push the price up with success.

We’ve looked at gaming on the iPhone and iPod Touch before and found it’s not really up to the standard of the Nintendo DS or Sony PSP yet, so there’d have to be a serious increase in the quality of games on the App Store, not just quantity – but on the other hand, increasing revenue from games could up future budgets and quality.

What do you reckon though? Would you pay $20 for an iPhone game? Let us know in the comments below.

I really don´t see myself playing a game on the iphone for over an hour. That´s why there are game consoles.

I think I agree with you Bentlezandbenz. I’m also infuriated by the number of “premium” games that don’t let you keep listening to your own music when you load them up, they just cut your music off and bring in their own, usually attached to a crappy intro video!

I enjoy gaming on the iPhone for a few minutes at a time, 10 at most, but I can’t imagine playing for an hour plus. I even struggle to play for long on a PSP. The only way to play games properly is on a console with a decent size screen. I certainly won’t be paying £20 for an iPhone game when that’s the same price as some Xbox 360 games.
