With Google behind it, you would think that advertising on the Android platform was all sewn up – especially with Google’s AdWords now able to display ads targeted at Android users via the built-in browser app. Cheeky ad upstarts AdMob have other ideas.
AdMob’s new advertising unit allows application developers to add targeted ads directly into their applications – something even advertising behemoth Google hasn’t tried yet.
The first developers on board for the launch include AccuWeather, Jirbo, and TapJoy. AdMob vice president Alib Diab said, “We are already seeing strong interest in developing applications for Android-based devices, similar to what we saw with the iPhone last summer, and are very excited to take the lead in helping developers monetize their applications on this fast-growing device platform.”
With the Android app store still only offering free downloads, this is the only way to actually earn revenue from Android coding at the moment – surely Google aren’t going to take this lying down?
