Apple’s App Store has approved a podcast app for the iPhone that it previously banned for “duplicating the functionality of the Podcast section iTunes”. Are Jobs and Co finally warming to developers pushing the iPhone’s limits?

Podcaster was denied access to the App store back in September after apparently infringing on a previously-unknown condition of use. The developer, Almerica, was forced to sell the app via the ‘Ad Hoc’ method where developers can approve individual iPhones and send them apps directly. At the time, the App did not actually step on iTunes’ toes at all and offered downloading functions unavailable through other means, which was all a bit confusing.

Nearly five months on, Podcaster (now rebranded as RSSPlayer) is now cleared for take off and on sale via the App Store despite the fact that iTunes now does contain the functionality that Apple was so annoyed about. It is a strange and confusing world.

RSSPlayer will let you subscribe to podcast RSS feeds and can download directly to your phone. Unlike the official version, though, you aren’t limited to just 10MB and can grab as much data as you want for your listening pleasure.
