BlackBerry Storm apps are only just being accepted for inclusion in RIM’s official Application Centre, and we’re still a couple of months away from one-tap access to them.

But that needn’t stop you loading apps onto the mobile directly and getting the BlackBerry Storm loaded with new goodies right away. We’ve scoured the web and fished out five of the best BlackBerry Storm apps you can install and start using today!

Viigo
Viigo is a neat little information centre, bringing handy updates on everything from the weather to news and entertainment. It works by pulling in RSS feeds, and is pre-populated with tons of sources for everything you’d typically need while on the road. Flight times, sports results and local information is all there, at the click of the screen. Point your BlackBerry Storm’s browser to www.getviigo.com to download it.

TalkLock
One of the BlackBerry Storm’s most annoying quirks is its touchscreen stays active while you’re on a call. We’ve put people on hold with our cheek several times, so when we saw TalkLock, we had to install it immediately. It kicks into action as soon as your call is connected, and locks the screen so you can’t prod it with your face. Unlocking the screen simply requires a swipe of the finger. A bit like, ahem, the iPhone’s unlock screen. Get a download link sent to your Storm from the TalkLock homepage.

Storm Level Pro
The BlackBerry Storm will see its accellerometer used and abused once RIM opens the Application Centre in March, but until then you can start showing off its tilt-sensing abilities with Storm Level Pro. It acts as a spirit level, using the Storm’s sensor to power it. Unlike some of the iPhone apps that do the same, the BlackBerry Storm version will let you calibrate it for maximum accuracy, and even includes on-screen rulers to help with on the spot measuring. Unfortunately, it’s a paid app, available for $4.99, or £3.67.

TwitterBerry
Twitter apps are due to flood the Application Centre, but until they do you can use TwitterBerry’s latest version on the BlackBerry Storm. Sure, it wasn’t written specifically with the touchscreen ‘berry in mind, but it’ll make use of its accelerometer for landscape or portrait tweeting, as well as flashing the Storm’s LED when there are new messages to read, and best of all it’s free. Download it from Orangatame.

Facebook
Facebook doesn’t come installed on the BlackBerry Storm by default, but you can grab it by heading into the Application Centre menu and tapping on its icon. It’s one of the best apps available for RIM’s touchscreen emailer, and if you haven’t installed it yet, you’re doing your phone a disservice. Why on earth RIM didn’t install it as standard, we’ll never know, but at least they made it easy to install, and it’s definitely worth tapping up, especially since it’s free.
