The boffins at Nokia’s Beta Labs have retired theold Nokia Chat application in favour of the new and improved Contacts on Ovi, which combines real time online chatting with contact management, geolocation and social networking. It probably makes the tea, too.
Ovi is Nokia’s all-encompassing mobile Internet portal-cum-service that it is slowly filling with useful Ovi branded functions like Files on Ovi and Ovi Share.
Contacts on Ovi takes your mobile contacts list and lets you browse for Ovi-using friends to initiate Intsant Messaging chat sessions. You can check to see if any friends are nearby and see their locations on Nokia Maps.
You also broadcast both your location (only to people you know, so don’t get too paranoid) and current status. Ovi will even let your mates know what you are listening to, so now might be a good time to delete that S-Club Juniors album you downloaded ‘for a laugh’.
