We’re all doomed. British Airways has just announced it will offer a mobile phone service to the suits in business class on some of its flights – but no voice calls allowed, for the moment at least.

The BlackBerry and Bluetooth headset brigade will soon be able to bash out emails and send SMSs for hours on end on BA flights between London City airport and JFK in New York.

The service will start in the Autumn, and while no voice calls will be allowed at first, BA says it may allow them if the initial trial is successful. “We believe the route and the new technology will offer an appealing package to business travellers,” said a BA spokesperson.

Swell, but what about the rest of us? We’ve known for ages that the whole don’t turn your phone on or everyone on board will die scenario was rubbish, but there’s something ever so slightly pleasant about not having to listen to people prattle on about project management and “synergisation” when you’re crossing a continent on a pressurised tube. Suddenly, easyJet seems so much more appealing…
