Struggling publisher Eidos is pinning its hopes on Lara Croft to fill its coffers once more as it announces a new set of downloadable content (DLC) for the Xbox 360 version of the action-platformer. Tomb Raider: Underworld – Beneath the Ashes will be released onto Xbox LIVE marketplace on February 10th.

Beneath the Ashes continues the story from where it left off at the end of the main game, taking Lara back to the burned out remains of Croft Manor, which was the setting for the Underworld’s opening level. Inside Lara will encounter a massive series of caverns and crypts which have somehow remained undiscovered in all of the eight previous Tomb Raider titles.

The new content will include an additional 125 achievement points to unlock, as well as six new Lara outfits to gawp at.

It doesn’t end there though; a second set of DLC – Lara’s Shadow – will also be landing a month later. The full game hasn’t proved to be a huge commercial success for Eidos, leading to a profits warning from the company and recent talks of an acquisition bid. Underworld definitely wasn’t the worst Tomb Raider title we’ve played, but Lady Lara’s formulaic adventures have been showing their age, especially when competing against multi-format blockbusters like Fallout 3.

Perhaps this new episodic approach will work more in the franchise’s favour.
