We reported yesterday that Apple’s plastic MacBook had been given a new set of specs in the US, and now, a day later, they’ve come to the UK… along with a price increase.
The new plastic MacBook comes with a 2GHz Intel Core 2 Duo processor, double the previous standard memory at 2GB and a 120GB hard drive.
The most important addition, however, is an NVIDIA GeForce 9400M graphics chip. It’ll make the laptop more able when it comes to graphics intensive apps, and should also mean it runs the next version of OS X, dubbed Snow Leopard, like a dream.
That’s because NVIDIA graphics will support Apple’s forthcoming OpenCL technology, due for inclusion in Snow Leopard, using the graphics chip and main processor in tandem to work on complex apps and tricky jobs. It should make the machine more powerful all round.
However, those new specs come at an increased price. The plastic MacBook, which is already showing its age design-wise, now costs £719, that’s a £15 increase and the second price rise for the plastic computer since the introduction of its aluminium-clad successor.
Still, at least those buying it can be safe in the knowledge it’s future-proofed for the next OS X, which should launch later this year.
