An Asus laptop made out of bamboo seemed barmy enough, but we’ve heard from an inside source that Asus is testing out even more absurd materials – including Blue Peter favourite, papier mache.

We were speaking to Asus UK marketing specialist John Swatton about the company’s plans for 2009 when he let slip some intriguing remarks about what its getting up to over at R&D.

It seems the fellas over at Asus’s Materials Testing Laboratory have been “testing other materials to replace the chassis…(including) papier mache”. Whatever next? An Eee PC made out of sticky back plastic and used yoghurt pots? Or a threeway folding laptop made of paper. Oh no wait, that last one is real and ready for production.

Swatton wouldn’t say if it was a success, but it’s all part of Asus’ green initiative, apparently, and while this one sounds like a non starter – yes, normal laptops break in water, but they don’t dissolve – it’s good to hear that a major manufacturer is trying out new materials for a future without oil.
