The PS3 might have had a tough run in the latter stages of 2008 but Sony has come out fighting. In a recent interview Sony Computer Entertainment boss, Kaz Hirai, claimed “official” leadership of the console industry and hit out at archrival Xbox 360 for “lacking longevity”.
Speaking in the latest issue of Official PlayStation Magazine, Kaz claimed “This is not meant in terms of numbers, or who’s got the biggest install base, or who’s selling most in any particular week or month, but I’d like to think that we continue official leadership in this industry.”
More importantly, he’s still confident that the PS3 can pull ahead of its rivals in the long-run. The long-run being the expected ten year life span of the PS3. “Unless things go really bad, there’s no way that at the end of a life cycle our competition is going have a higher install base,” he said.
On the topic of the Xbox 360, he didn’t beat about the bush. “You need a word that describes something that lacks longevity,” he explained with a laugh.
What about the all-powerful Wii then? “It’s difficult to talk about Nintendo, because we don’t look at their console as being a competitor,” he said “They’re a different world, and we operate in our world – that’s the kind of way I look at things.”
