Apple unveiled its Q1 2009 results tonight, and it had a surprise in store: the Apple TV has had a fantastic quarter, increasing sales by 300% and guaranteeing itself further investment and development.

While many have decried the Apple TV for lacking true PVR capabilities and patchy codec support, it seems to be doing well. Apple says it’s “still a hobby” but confirmed that, compared to the same quarter in 2008, it had seen a 300% increase in sales.

The latest round of Apple TV software updates were credited with helping sales, as they brought movie rentals to the set top box, and Apple has pledged to continue investing in it.

A brief reprieve? Surprise success story? Or simply a promise to keep patching Apple TV while we continue using it to run Boxee?! Answers in the usual space below!
