Apple has seen the slew of iPhone-esque phones released recently, and it’s not happy. COO and interim CEO Tim Cook ended tonight’s conference call by issuing a veiled threat to rivals keen on copying the handset. Palm Pre, BlackBerry Storm, and anyone even thinking of using multitouch, we think he means you.
During a question and answer session after Apple’s conference call, Tim Cook was at pains to highlight Apple’s patents, but stopped short of accusing any rival of directly copying the iPhone.
“I don’t want to talk about any specific company,” he said, explaining that it was “just a general statement,” but that Apple is “ready to suit up and go against anyone… we will not stand for having our IP ripped off and will use whatever weapons we have at our disposal.”
That sounds like fighting talk, and given Apple’s claim that it has over 200 patents filed on the iPhone alone, we’re pretty sure it has a weight of evidence behind that tough talk.
