Xbox 360 has DivX in a huff

There’s a row brewing between Microsoft’s Xbox 360 team and DivX, with the video giant saying it’s “not happy” over the way the Big M has shoehorned it inside the console.

Jérôme Vashist-Rota, founder and vice president of creative, brand and community at DivX said: “When it comes to DivX branding, we have had a hard time with Microsoft. Obviously we would love for some sort of partnership to happen. Currently, Microsoft does support DivX, which is fantastic, but the company has brought in some third-party support for the Xbox 360, and we are not very happy with that.”

Meanwhile, Sony supports DivX in full with the PlayStation 3, meaning it’s able to play back any DivX encoded files, even HD material.

Speaking to TechRadar, Rota said: “”It’s all about branding, and branding can work both ways, so it is not just us losing out with the Xbox 360′s lack of official certification.”

That sounds like a little bit of a threat to us. We certainly jumped for joy when the Xbox received DivX playback last year, but it sounds like full compatibility in the future could be on the ropes. Stay tuned for more as we hear it.

It’s a crappy implementation of DivX that deliberately ignores the MKV container.

Why doesn’t XBMC run on the 360 yet? Stupid MS and their stupid anti-homebrew slant. want to play copied games? Go right ahead, they didn’t even make an effort to stop you! Want to write your own code for your own machine, that you bought? Tough.
