Windows Mobile is about to go head to head with the iPhone’s App Store. Microsoft will make several Windows Mobile announcements next month at Mobile World Congress, but just as Steve Ballmer’s CES speech slipped online early, so have its latest mobile unveilings.

According to MSmobiles, Steve Ballmer will take the stage for the second time in as many months to deliver a speech everyone is already expecting. He’ll officially unveil Windows Mobile 6.5 alongside a range of new services dubbed “Sky” services.

There’ll be SkyBox, which will handle over the air synchronisation in much the same way as Windows Live Mesh, or Apple’s Mobile Me, already does, a separate version of SkyBox for businesses called SkyLine, and the big story: SkyMarket.

Ballmer will unveil SkyMarket as Microsoft’s own app store on Windows Mobile handsets. It’ll go head to head with Apple, BlackBerry and Palm in making it easy to get new apps onto mobile phones.

Will it be enough to stave off the threat to Windows Mobile? We’ll have to wait until next month to find out.
