Sky is preparing an update to its set-top box software, bringing auto standby to daytime viewing as well as night time telly sessions, and making the Sky box one of the most eco-friendly devices around.
Rolling out in July, Sky’s new software will switch off boxes that have not been used for four hours during the day. They’ll flash up a warning message first, but after that will switch to standby.
During the night, they’ll slip into standby after two hours without a button press.
It should reduce Sky’s carbon emissions by 90,000 tonnes, and save £20 million from the combined electricity bills of its customers.
Sky CEO Jeremy Darroch explained the move, stating: “Customers expect us to play our part in creating a healthy environment, even in more challenging economic times, and these new commitments reflect that.”

Pretty arrogant and unacceptable – I regularly watch such channels as Nat Geo for hours, I don’t channel hop – this is an inconvenience I can do with out – just like the stupid PIN requirement for movies in the daytime that can not be disabled – there is nobody under 40 in our house.
Why can’t people be left to do the responsible things themselves, must we become zombies and totally controlled by others whims ….
