UPDATE: Yup, it looks like the Myka BitTorrent box is too good to be true. Dan Lovy, the man behind it, has been in touch with TorrentFreak to say that he was unable to raise funds for the P2P player.
The Myka BitTorrent set top box, which downloads P2P content right to your TV, seemed like a great idea to us when we first heard about it a year ago, but it’s remained that way – just an idea – for far too long now… but that could be about to change.
Myka’s just announced it’s going into production at last, but beware: we’re poised to write this one off as vapourware. Find out why after the jump.
The official Myka website has just been updated, announcing that the first of its P2P home media players are in production, up for pre-order and will be shipping in “the next 4 to 6 weeks”.
While we like the sound of a set top box with crazy codec support, no need for constant firmware battles, and an 80, 160 or 500GB hard drive, we don’t recommend you hand over your credit card details just yet: several sites have come forward to say that Myka are yet to hand over the cash for ad banners they purchased including BitTorrent news site TorrentFreak.
The lack of a real world address is always a cause for concern on a company website too: we ran the company’s URL through a quick whois scan, only to discover that whoever is behind it has covered their tracks with a proxy domain.
Dubious, eh? We’ll keep you posted if Myka makes a real world appearance anytime soon. If and when broadcasters embrace P2P as a way of legally distributing their content, you might want to kit yourself out with a player we know for certain exists instead: have a look at Israel’s HDi Dune range. Or consider Apple TV hacked with Boxee, which also allows BitTorrent downloads.
