Eidos has announced that it has received a preliminary acquisition bid for the company, which holds the rights to the iconic Tomb Raider series. The UK publisher has stated that talks are at “a very early stage” and hasn’t yet revealed the name of its suitor.
Eidos has been facing financial troubles and last week issued a profit warning, following weak sales of the latest Tomb Raider title, Underworld. The game itself wasn’t the worst of the Tomb Raider title we’ve ever played (thank you, Angel of Darkness), but it arrived alongside so many other top-notch console titles that it failed to stand out from the crowd, despite Eidos’ sneaky attempts to manipulate metacritic scores.
Eidos has said that it will be making further statements about the takeover in due course, which leaves us to only speculate on who it is that wants to take it on.
Activision Blizzard is the big dog in the publishing world right now, which probably means it has the cash to splurge, but former king Electronic Arts would seem a more logical fit with the IPs that Eidos controls, which also include Hitman and Championship Manager. We’ll let you know when we find out more.
