Google Maps has just got a new feature: transit layers. What’s that, we hear you cry – well, it’s basically public transport info, so if you’ve ever wanted to see exactly how the London Underground looks when laid over a standard street map, your wish has been granted!

When viewing London (and a host of other world cities) on Google Maps you can access the new view by ticking the “Transit” box in the “More” menu. Do that and you’ll see the Tube lines, plus the DLR and, according to Google, the overground train routes too. Although we’ve just tried it and there’s no indication of the overground lines into Waterloo or Victoria – so perhaps there’s a little room for improvement. Bus routes next please, Google!

As far as I can tell it’s only services run by London Underground, so they’re talking about London Overground with a capital ‘O’, the official name for the former Silverlink lines now run by LU, which do show up on the maps. Mainline overground (with a little ‘o’) services aren’t there yet
