PSP-3000 owners who want a convenient workaround for the system’s tightened security are going to have to keep sighting tight. Datel, makers of the Lite Blue Tool – a special battery that puts the PSP into service mode – have removed the devices from their website, revealing that the company faces legal action by Sony Computer Entertainment Europe.
When the PSP-3000 launched, the hacking and homebrew community were briefly at a loss as to how to circumvent the console’s new hacker-proofing. But within days, UK company Datel had already found a workaround and was putting together a special service mode battery to magically break past the PSP’s defences.
Lite Blue Tool was due to launch on December 1st, but January ’09 arrived with no sign of it. Datel has now issued a statement explaining the device’s absence:
“Due to legal action by Sony Computer Entertainment Europe we are currently not able to fulfil orders for the Lite Blue Tool Battery. Any orders received for this product have not been processed and no charges have been made. We will inform customers about availability of this product when this situation has been resolved.”
There’s still a glimmer of hope that the Lite Blue Tool will make it to shelves if the case goes in its favour, but the courts tend to take a dim view of products that seem to facilitate console piracy. Maybe the PSP-4000’s defence will prove a little easier to break through, eh?
