Expect megapixel meltdown later this year, as Sharp unveils new mobile phone camera sensors running at a whopping 12 megapixels. They’ll be available to phone manufacturers in January, and will hit full production as early as March.

Sharp says its new sensors offer “the highest performance in the industry” and will be offering samples to mobile manufacturers from January 31. When the sensors go into full production, Sharp will be cranking out 300,000 units each month.

It should mean 12 megapixel mobile phones aren’t too far behind, especially since Sony has already shown off a rival 12 megapixel mobile sensor. Stay tuned, and we’ll bring you news of the first 12 megapixel handset as soon as we hear it.
