According to a number of sources, the latest intended addition to the Indiana Jones games series has been given the chop. This doesn’t come as too much of a surprise, given that the last showing of Indiana Jones 2007 (working title) was way back in 2006 and nothing has been seen of it since. Then there’s the fact that the latest film, Kingdom of Crystal Skull, was a cinematic experience comparable to placing your nether regions between two belt sanders covered in Tabasco sauce.
In spite of that though, Indy’s latest flick actually managed good run at the box office, scoring number three position in the highest grossing films of 2008. Indy’s good name clearly has a lot of mileage left in it and that’s going to mean a game sooner or later. We can only hope its more to the standard of Fate of Atlantis than some of the more souless 3D follow-ups that have followed since.
LucasArts hasn’t officially acknowledged the game’s demise, but IGN has it from insiders and other whistleblowers that the game has definitely been cancelled, and its development team put on to new projects. The company has promised that it “remains absolutely committed to the Indiana Jones franchise” and that “details are forthcoming”. Don’t be too surprised if Indy just skips this generation – with the excellent LEGO Indiana Jones out already there, his name won’t be easily forgotten.
And anyway, we’re confident LucasArts can whip up another 30 or so Star Wars games to tide us over in the meantime.
