Microsoft’s going head to head with Apple iLife, finally launching the an app to take on Garageband in the shape of Songsmith. It’s USP? You simply have to sing into a microphone, and the software will write the music to accompany you.
It’s absurdly clever, with options to tweak the music style once you’ve recorded the vocals. Changing sliders, you can make the composition more or less “happy” or “jazzy”.
More advanced users can tweak the individual notes, or add their own compositions, either using virtual instruments, or by recording from their own.
It takes the Garageband concept, and opens it up to users who aren’t musically minded. We reckon it’s a winner, even if Microsoft is charging £26 for the full version, while Apple’s Garageband is free! Download a free trial here and have a go.
