None other than Chad Kroeger of Canadian post-grunge outfit – and soundtrackers of the DFS furniture sale adverts – Nickelback raised his shaggy head above rock’s parapet to rail against a generation of youths wasting their time playing games like Guitar Hero when they could be out playing actual guitars and recording soundtracks to their own furniture adverts.

Well Chad, it seems that the kids are alright after all. Activision CEO Mike Griffith used his CES keynote to inform us that Guitar sales are apparently up 27%.  Many new guitarists claim Guitar Hero and similar games as an inspiration, according to US music retailer Guitar Center.

Guitar Center’s survey reports that two-thirds of non-musicians exposed to music games say they plan to start playing a real instrument in the next couple of years.
