A job ad from Apple hints that the firm’s looking to upgrade the iPhone’s innards, adding HSUPA capability for faster mobile uploads, and maybe even video conferencing on the move.
The job ad, which calls for Performance Engineers and Testing Engineers to work in its mobile phone division, lists knowledge of HSUPA as an optional extra, alongside HSDPA expertise as a definite requirement.
HSUPA is used in high speed mobiles to transmit data as a faster rate. It’s helpful when uploading photos and videos, and allows for smooth video to be sent from a handset too.
Does it hint that Apple has plans for an iChat-esque video chat service on the iPhone? Maybe. But Apple’s only listed it as an optional requirement, so it’s unlikely to be a priority.
That said, HSUPA phones are becoming more common. If the iPhone doesn’t get the technology soon, we’d be very surprised.
