With the PS3 losing out to the Xbox 360 and the Wii this Xmas, and reports suggesting that Sony will suffer a $1.1 billion loss this year, Analysts are predicting that the company must lower the price of the PS3 console to match its competitors.

Games industry analyst Michael Pachter reckons that Sony will soon knock $100 from the price of the 80GB PS3 (in North America) setting the price at $299.

“Once the PS3 is at a more affordable price point, we think that sales of that device will once again begin to grow,” says Pachter.

Pachter also predicted that both consoles would slash prices before Christmas – only the Xbox did so, seemingly reaping the rewards with a huge rise in sales. As ever, a price cut in the States could mean anything when it comes to the UK market, but it is a safe bet that Sony are at least thinking very hard about the price of their console. Charging almost double the price of a high-end Xbox 360 surely isn’t sustainable.
