Sony 3D video tech shown at CES

It’s not 3D TV, it’s not 3D OLED, but it’ll do nicely in place of them. Sony’s got a full colour 3D cinema system up and running, and while it’s going to be on display at the CES Sony stand, we’ve clocked it in jaw dropping action already: come and see after the jump!

Sony was as good as its word when it promised a 3D breakthrough at its press conference yesterday, proudly showing off the full colour system on several huge screens at its CES keynote.

Up on show were excerpts from animations by both Pixar and Dreamworks, with the heads of both companies, John Lasseter and Jeffrey Katzenberger, on hand to preach the word of 3D. Animation works particularly well, with incredible clarity for 3D and a full colour range, though from what we saw, brightness and contrast are definitely two aspects of the tech that need to be improved. Live action isn’t looking too shabby either, with a clip from a recent American Football game showing the depth of the field very well indeed.

Sony CEO Howard Stringer compered the event, but didn’t say when we would see the technology implemented commercially, unlike Panasonic, which is insisting on a 2010 debut. We’ll have a hands on at the Sony stand later today, but in the meantime, check out the pics (In 2D, unfortunately) below.
