White sticks for the blind certainly serve their purpose, but won’t always catch everything lying in the ground or below head height, leading to nasty accidents for the visually impaired. Not any more though, with iSonic’s sonar for the blind.

Traipsing through the fringe halls of CES in Las Vegas today (It’s like one of the circles of Hell, only with dodgy electrical companies from Shenzhen, and batteries), we spied this actually useful gizmo to aid the blind.

It works with the simple sonar concept: fix the box onto the top of the cane, and it’ll vibrate as any objects approach within seven feet, or read out the distance to said hurdle. Commendable, but just one catch we can foresee: walking down a busy street could be very distracting with it turned on. Daredevil this isn’t.
