Asus sent our jaws to the floor when it unveiled its Oiro origami laptop concept at CES, using an origami style folding mechanism to expand the keyboard when the lid is open, and allow more efficient cooling airflow. What we didn’t realise is that the concept is actually close to being put in production.
We caught up with Asus lead user experience designer, Daniel Alenquer, at CES, who told us there are few physical hurdles in the way of putting Oiro into production.
“Asus has been making [the components inside] for years,” he said. “We actually won several patents with the design, so we have the patents, we have the ideas. That makes it a lot easier to bring it to market.”
Alenquer confirmed that all the technologies used in the Oiro concept are available today, and if Asus chose to, it could put the laptop into production immediately.
However, it’s still early days. The whole concept was only finished in the last month, moving from its codename “Airflow” to the Oiro concept on show at CES.
Take a peek at the pictures below to see the prototypes that led to the final design.
