UIQ – the company behind the ‘other’ implementation of the Symbian OS found on several exotic smartphones and popularised by Sony Ericsson’s P-series touch screen phones – has filed for bankruptcy.
The OS is still to be found in the odd handset – Motorola’s RIZR Z10 being one of the more recent efforts – but its popularity has dimmed in recent years and Symbian developers have largely turned to Nokia’s S60 and S40 implementations.
With the arrival of the iPhone elegant touchscreen interface and Google’s Android plus the already well establshed WIndows Mobile it seems like there was just one too many high-end phone operating system around.
