One thing that is missing from the iPhone’s otherwise impressive list of Apps is a universal remote app. Even on my Palm III I could load up an app that would let me fire off IR commands at my telly and video. Why not the iPhone?
Well, ok, the lack of an IR emitter might be seen as one possible reason, I suppose.
One bunch of students at the University of Toronto aren’t going to let a little detail like that stop them, however. They have come up with UIRemote - a combination of a slick iPhone app and a little IR widget that plugs into the iPhone’s headphone jack and turns sound into IR pulses.
Neither is available for sale as yet – the project is still a prototype and they are tweaking the user interface on the app, but those crazy kids hope to have it available soon.
