Networked hard drives aren’t anything new, but the new Linksys Media Hub makes the technology ultra-simple, and lets you access your music, photos and movies anywhere you can find a web browser.
The new storage devices come packed with two SATA hard drives, totalling either 500GB or 1TB. There’s also an LCD display on the front, so you can see what it’s up to, and a card reader so you can quickly offload the contents of memory cards.
The really clever stuff goes on on the software side, though. The new Linksys software lets you tap into the drive from a single address wherever you are in the world, and its simple interface even lets you play back movies from its hard drive in the browser.
If you’re accessing it at home, it’ll work just like a networked drive and once it’s set up it’ll happily serve files to PCs, games consoles and anything that’ll recognise UPnP devices. It’ll even work with mobile phones supporting DLNA, including Nokia’s N-Series and Samsung’s smartphones.
