The ‘Curse of Silence‘ – a bug in Nokia S60 phones that can allow a malicious SMS to stop your phone receiving any future messages – is potentially a real headache for Nokia owners. Nobody wants to do a hard reset of their phone (the ‘official’ cure for the problem).
For their part, Nokia is prepping a firmware fix and liasing with carriers to get them to block the offending messages.
If you are already Cursed, though, Fortinet have a solution in the form of their FortiCleanUp tools for S60 phones. FortiCleanUp can remove a variety of mobile MalWare and has just been tweaked to add support for the Curse of Silence.
When run, it will scan the phone’s storage and remove any SMS it finds containing the malformed address that triggers the bug – fixing the problem without the need for a hard reset. Sorted!
